The State Conservatory is the first conservatory in Russia, the higher music institute that was created in 1862 by a pianist, composer and a conductor Anton Rubinstein. During the long history of the conservatory there were studying a lot of famous musicians, and till now it is considered one of the most prestigious music centers in the world, combining the theatre with the educational music institute. From 1887 the Conservatory occupies the building of former Bolshoy Kameny Theatre (in front of the Mariinsky Theatre). But that time the building was smaller and needed to be remade. In 1896 the building was opened and a little bit later a gorgeous concert was organized there.

Nowadays the State Conservatory building is a part of the marvelous assembly of the Theatre Square. First it was created by a talented Italian master Rinaldi, but then it was remade by another architect Vladimir Nicola. On the stage of the Big auditorium hall of the Conservatory one can enjoy examples of Russian Classical ballets: “Swan Lake”, “Nutcracker”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “Giselle”, “Cinderella”; world famous operas: “Traviata”, “Eugene Onegin”, “Iolanta”, “Orfeo”, “Marriage of Figaro”. Also a lot of concerts of classical music performed by excellent Russian and foreign musicians take place there.

A lot of famous names are connected with that theatric unit. The first graduated from this Conservatory was Tchaikovsky, the author of world famous “Swan Lake” and a great amount of magnificent works. During the long period Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov was working there, that’s why now the Conservatory is called in honor of this wonderful composer. (His monument you can note near the building as well as the monument to another outstanding composer Glinka).

The dress code: formal style. During the cold season(autumn, winter, early spring) remember about a possible snow and rain outside, that’s why don’t forget to take shoes to change and to leave your coat and hat in the cloakroom.

Constructed right in the city center at the Theatre (Teatralnaya) Square The Conservatory is quiet easy to reach from every point of the city, using underground(stations Admiralteyskaya, Sadovaya, Sennaya, Spasskaya, 15 minutes walk), taxi o simply walking along the beautiful streets and canals of Saint Petersburg. Beside we’ll gladly organize a transfer for you from the hotel or your cruise ship.

The Theatre is worth visiting every time of the year. Generally the time May-July is considered the most romantic and nicest time for visiting theatres because apart from the precious performance you can enjoy wonderful White Nights of Saint Petersburg!
